Whether you’re eager for sun-kissed days spent lakeside or nights defined by decadent meals and even better live music, Austin truly has something for everyone—and, with a never-ending list of fun things to do, sits atop our roster of must-visit cities. With Jenni’s own trips for reference, plus the help of a few local friends, we’ve curated a definitive guide to navigating Austin. From boutique hotels to the best hidden-gem bars and restaurants, consider this your essential resource.

The Austin City Guide
Activities
Barton Springs Pool—This three-acre natural springs pool is a great family spot—and it stays near 70 degrees year-round. Lay on the lawn with a good book or picnic with friends in between dips. Regardless of the activity you choose, this is one of the best perks of a day in Austin, Texas.
Barton Creek Greenbelt—Hike, rock climb, or bike through this beautifully preserved area, just minutes from downtown. There are also several swimming holes scattered throughout the greenbelt.
Lady Bird Lake—Kayak or paddle-board on the lake, or take a walk on the trail that surrounds Lady Bird Lake for a taste of fresh air and nature without leaving the city.
South Congress Street—If you’re looking for a one-stop-shop destination for shopping, drinking, and beyond, South Congress Street is for you. No trip to Austin is complete without a visit to a few South Congress restaurants and shops.

Commodore Perry Estate—When it comes to Austin, Texas hotels, the Commodore Perry Estate by Auberge is always at top of mind. Designed by interiors icon Ken Fulk, the reimagined residential estate features sprawling grounds and curated rooms that make you instantly feel like you’re in another world.
Austin Proper Hotel—You can’t go wrong with any of Austin’s hotels, but the Proper Hotel will always hold a special place on our list. Situated just steps from the iconic Lady Bird Lake and featuring interiors you’ll instantly feel inspired by, the Proper is an iconic destination worthy of a visit.
The Line Austin—Simple and subdued yet entirely elevated, the Line Austin is the perfect option for any type of stay. Enjoy an afternoon by the pool before exploring downtown Austin and the many flavors of the city.
Hotel Saint Cecilia—This 4-star estate hotel has 5 suites, 6 poolside bungalows, 6 garden suites, and 3 studios all decorated in an artistic style that’s inviting yet sophisticated.
Hotels
Hotel San Jose—Owned by the same hotel group, the ivy-covered Hotel San Jose is set in a revamped 1930s motor lodge and has 40 rooms. The décor is colorful minimalism.
Austin Motel—Yet another of Bunkhouse’s properties is this renovated ‘30s motel, with 41 rooms. With quirky retro décor and a casual feel, this historic hotel attracts SXSW visitors.
South Congress Hotel—If you’ve made your way through the other sections of our guide, you know there’s a lot to love about this bustling hotel. Overlooking the iconic South Congress Avenue with a private pool on the roof, it’s relaxing too.


Shopping
Take Heart—Find a special treat for yourself or a gift for someone else at this thoughtfully-edited home goods and personal care store.
Sunroom—This cool boutique at the SOCO Hotel is filled with the kind of easy but interesting staples you want to wear every day. Designers include Beatrice Valenzuela, Baserange, and Stella McCartney.
Maufrais—This legendary hat shop on South Congress is bound to have you instantly fall in love with the Texan way of living. With western flair and elevated essentials that fit the bill, do yourself a favor and pay Maufrais a visit.
ByGeorge—This group of fashion and lifestyle stores, first opened in 1979, are an institution in Austin—and still the best place to shop in the city. In the women’s store, you’ll find The Row and Balenciaga as well as contemporary labels for everyday dressing.
KickPleat—This beautifully edited women’s clothing store has an artsy vibe and clean, modern interior. Brands include Ancient Greek Sandals, Lemaire, Re/Done, and more.
Restaurants
Justine’s—This sexy French restaurant is tucked away on the East side. If you can’t get there for dinner, it’s also a great late-night spot for wine or coffee. They’re open late, which means Justine’s is the ultimate place to gather after a screening at SXSW.
Franklin Barbeque—An Austin staple for delicious BBQ and more. Be prepared to wait in line and have some fun getting to know fellow diners—but the BBQ is more than worth the wait.
Bufalina—Delicious Neapolitan-style pizza in a spare but cozy setting with a large wood-burning oven and communal-style tables. If you have trouble scoring a table, try the nearby second location, Bufalina Due.
Josephine House—This Clarksville spot is the slightly more casual offshoot of Jeffrey’s, a popular fine dining restaurant located just next door. The whitewashed cottage restaurant serves seasonal New American fare and craft cocktails. If you’re just visiting for drinks, sit at the marble-top bar or on the property’s grassy lawn.
Tiny Boxwoods—Perfect for date night or a celebratory evening with friends, this Bryker Woods institution instantly transports you to a vacation-like mindset where greenery is abundant and the wine is flowing.


Restaurants
June’s All Day—When looking for things to do in Austin, Texas, an afternoon at June’s All Day is always atop our list. This South Congress Avenue bistro-style restaurant has great burgers, cocktails, and a killer jukebox. Perfect for a fun, easy lunch or dinner with friends or family.
Clark’s Oyster Bar—Owned by the same folks as June’s, Clark’s is a casual seafood spot in a cute neighborhood called Clarksville. Sit outside on the tree-shaded deck and enjoy oysters and cocktails as the sun sets.
Uchi & Uchiko—Unexpected twists on traditional Japanese cooking and the freshest sushi ever make these sibling restaurants a local favorite. Uchi is more intimate and elegant, while Uchiko has a livelier energy thanks to its open layout.
Launderette—This old-school laundromat-turned-restaurant has sophisticated, homey décor, comforting classic dishes, and color-changing straws that the kids in your group will love.


Bars & Cafés
Easy Tiger—This fun bakery, café, and beer garden has a large outdoor area where you can feel free to sit and stay awhile. They also serve simple snacks, cheeses, and more.
Swedish Hill—This deli, café, and bakery is a must-visit on any trip to Austin. With an all-day menu that features classic deli favorites alongside grazing boards and incredible glasses of wine, a visit to Swedish Hill is always memorable.
Two Hands—With good food that’s great for you, this Australian-inspired café will easily become a favorite destination regardless of how long your visit may be. We recommend ordering what catches your eye and sharing amongst friends.
Jo’s—If you’re in need of a good cup of coffee, make Jo’s the stop. With various locations across Austin, this local spot is adored by everyone and anyone who walks through the door.
Apt 115—This curated bar is located in a converted apartment, meaning the ambiance and aesthetic is instantly alluring. With a menu that includes wine, craft beer, cheese, and charcuterie, you’re bound to enjoy yourself at Apt 115.
