February 23, 2023

From expansive estates to the coziest abodes, we’ve profiled a myriad of enviable dwellings over the years—picking a favorite would be virtually impossible. Whether it’s the perfect simplicity of a breakfast nook or influence from another time entirely, each space offers its own interpretation of impeccably executed design. And though there’s certainly no shortage of new inspiring interiors yet to be unearthed, these are the homes we’d gladly return to.

Sarah Sherman Samuel

When it comes to home inspiration, designer Sarah Sherman Samuel’s space is akin to anyone’s dream home. Surrounded by a sense of the outdoors on all sides, her Grand Rapids home serves as the canvas on which she has reinterpreted nature and its abundant shapes into a signature organic modernity—one we see in everything from the curves of her furniture to her bespoke architectural choices.

As you meander past added-in windows and beneath a serendipitous original skylight, the abundance of natural Michigan light beams in on a palpable whimsy—owed mostly to an expertly developed neutral palette complete with purposeful pops of warmth—a scalloped edge chaise here or an otherworldly light fixture there—and also perhaps to her preference for a coastal design sensibility regardless of locale. It’s easy to feel inspired inside Sarah’s abode, and we’re sure you’ll find all the makings of your version of home.

Brigette Romanek

Vibrant, soulful, and entirely alive, every room within designer Brigette Romanek’s Laurel Canyon home has a story of its own. Once home to rock legends, the sprawling 1925 Mediterranean-style space is rooted in a playful sensibility that is equal parts magnetic and dynamic—and is the ultimate source of home inspiration.

We’re endlessly inspired by the many elements of the unexpected that make this house a home. In fact, it’s the art of juxtaposition that brings us back to this space time and time again. Kitchen countertops are in non-traditional hues, plush, cozy couches live in opposition with sleek, modern lines, and the mixture of seemingly unrelated objects sharing walls and space (take, for example, the artwork by the likes of Kristen Giorgi and Scott Campbell) in fact results in the essence of the space: personal, authentic, and one-of-a-kind.

With historic bones, Brigette brings soulful touches to every inch of her space—from the modern dining room to the transitional living room—to ensure it’s a space you’ll never want to leave.

Susie Chambers

There’s one home we always return to when thinking up what makes up our dream home, and it’s the Malibu wonderland that Susie Chambers, the founder of Chambers Designs has effortlessly made her own. From the minimalist bedroom retreat that feels like a complete sanctuary to the transitional moments in the living room that are uniquely in sync with everyday living, there’s design magic at work inside her space that makes it magnetic in every way.

While the inspired interiors draw you in from the outset, the surrounding garden and backyard are what ensure you never leave. Designed for entertaining in any capacity, it’s easy to find yourself wandering from the lush pool to the outdoor dining table without missing a beat—but you’ll eventually end up in the classic kitchen with a dynamic island that serves as a centerpiece for gatherings. With neutrals aplenty, Susie’s space is one we covet to recreate with the Jenni Kayne sensibility.

Vanessa Alexander

When designer Vanessa Alexander set out to redesign the Malibu abode she calls home, she landed on a stylistic choice that made her beach house bold: she painted it black. For the interior designer behind Alexander Design, the decision was the final step in defining her take on the dream home aesthetic.

The house is built from the ground up, and the finished product illuminates a fine-tuned process. Vanessa worked with Kovac Design Studio and Terremoto to create a home that reflects how her family likes to live: at ease, outdoors, and together. Regardless of the time of day, you’re likely to find Vanessa and her loved ones in the kitchen and family room, where the open floor plan is perfect for seamless entertaining. From the hand-forged brass cabinetry to the striking pendant that hangs over the island, custom-designed pieces punctuate every room.

Regardless of the room you’re in, you’re drawn to her curated sense of ease in each space—and that’s something we can all aim to recreate.
