Natural Remedies: Turmeric

For some time now, I have looked to different foods and ingredients as ways of enhancing and optimizing health for both myself and my family. One of my very favorites: turmeric. Native to southeast India, this powerful plant in the ginger family has been used in cooking and medicinally for centuries and has a myriad of amazing health benefits.
The key to its beneficial properties: curcumin (which is also the source of its yellow-orange color). A bioactive ingredient found only in turmeric, it is also one that has been widely studied, perhaps most notably for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Proponents speak to its role in improved digestion, maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels, enhanced liver function, and a healthy metabolism. And as studies and trials continue to show its effectiveness, it is increasingly being used as treatment in improving Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, stroke damage, and even certain types of cancers.
In terms of implementing this powerful plant into your diet, there are several ways go about it, each with varying levels of potency. At the top of this list are high-quality, 100% organic turmeric supplements. Some to try: Organic India Turmeric Formula and Curcumin 500 with Bioperine by Pure Encapsulations. The Chalkboard Mag recommends the latter, in part because it contains bioperine, or black pepper extract, which has been shown instrumental in enhancing the degree and rate at which the curcumin is absorbed in the body.
