The Telluride Hideaway: A Mountain Retreat by Jenni Kayne Interiors
April 24, 2024
Our many-talented Interior Team’s latest project took them a few states over to one of our favorite destinations: Telluride, Colorado. Intended for luxe and comfortable family life and artfully infused with our signature west coast aesthetic, it’s an entirely new take on the classic ski retreat—timeless, minimalist, and elevated in every sense. Today, we’ve got an exclusive look inside. Read on for the full tour—plus a conversation with the team behind the design.

The Telluride Hideaway: A Mountain Retreat by Jenni Kayne Interiors
Rip & Tan: What kind of lifestyle was this home designed for?
Linnea Schooley: Our client, Emily Hickey of Chief Detective, is a longtime strategic and marketing advisor of ours. She served as a Jenni Kayne Board member and architected and executed our paid social strategy during some of our most critical growth years, and is a very close friend of the brand.
She wanted the space to be used as a local getaway and workspace for herself and her family as well as a welcoming retreat for friends. With only 1,000 sqaure feet, we had to be imaginative with the use of space. By taking advantage of the second bedroom as both an office space and bunk room, we were able to meet all of their needs.
Rip & Tan: In terms of style and feeling, what was the vision for this interior?
Linnea Schooley: Since the space is quite intimate, we wanted to keep the design clean and minimal while still evoking that cozy mountain feeling.
Rip & Tan: In a few words, how would you describe the finished project?
Linnea Schooley: Cozy, minimal, modern, intimate.

Rip & Tan: How did you blend the signature Jenni Kayne aesthetic with the client’s hopes and dreams for the space?
Linnea Schooley: We infused a bit of our classic California sensibility into this sweet Telluride getaway by bringing in light colors and playing with natural textures and materials throughout the space.
Rip & Tan: Can you walk us through the general design process for this project? Was this typical to the usual Interiors Jenni Kayne Interiors experience?
Linnea Schooley: This project was a bit atypical in that we partnered with a local design firm, Kit Designs, to execute on the ground. We developed the conceptual design and collaborated with Kit Designs to make it all a reality.
Rip & Tan: What are a few of your favorite features in the space?
Linnea Schooley: I love the living space, it feels very inviting and warm. We also added a Malm fireplace in the primary bedroom which gives the space a bit of a retro touch and has quickly become a favorite feature.

Rip & Tan: Let’s talk details—where did you source décor? What are some of the standout finishes?
Linnea Schooley: We knew there weren’t many local decor shops in Telluride, so along with our signature Jenni Kayne decor, we brought many pieces from our favorite spots in Los Angeles and supplemented them with a few small last-minute touches from shops in town.
Rip & Tan: In what ways does this home pay homage to the Telluride locale?
Linnea Schooley: Telluride has such a unique culture that blends the upscale mountain town with a little bit of a funky, eccentric flair. We paid homage to this distinctive combination by designing a modern mountain retreat but incorporating more playful elements like the Malm fireplace and unique antiques and ceramics.
